Frequently Asked Questions ...

What aspects of the process of Transcribing braille are most critical to creating the finished product?

Answer: Reviewing the items to determine pre-formatting issues, identifying possible omits, composing the modifications needed or requested, giving clear directions to the student and test administrator about the changes necessary from print to braille, accurately presenting the Braille Code.

What should the customer know about braille, tactile graphics, and BANA code in order to create items and art that can be transcribed?

Answer: That it likely takes the braille reader 2 ½ times longer to take a test than a sighted student. They should try looking through and feeling the tactiles in a test while comparing it to the regular print version of the test.

What is the most challenging or troublesome aspect of transcribing test items?

Answer: Presenting items that require multiple pages of givens when the student will be expected to reference several of the givens to construct their answer. Sighted students can easily visually scan and identify when referencing. The braille reader struggles to re-explore the references.

What features or elements of graphics in regular print books makes the creation of tactile graphics difficult?

Answer: Size, complexity (lines that cross or weave, features of the graphic that are close together, the number of different textures needed to represent the different features), three dimensional objects, cross sectional diagrams, visual relationships and orientations that are outside the braille readers experience (i.e.; presenting a question in which the answer requires the reader to have knowledge of the view through a microscope).

What features or elements should art have or not have so that creation of tactile graphics is successful?

Answer: If possible, to have the tactile diagram fit on the same page as the question and answer choices. To have at most, four different textures in one tactile diagram. If possible, to simplify or abbreviate parts of the print diagram which are not required to answer the question.
